ENGLISH WEEK @ SJKC Manchis (15-19/4/13)
1. Whole Week - Program "Speak Some English!"
Starting from Monday, pupils were encouraged to speak in English to any teachers in the school throughout the English week. However, pupils were only allowed to do so during non-P&P periods, which included the time before school starts, during recess and after school.
A theme was introduced to the pupils and they must speak English phrases or sentences according to the theme. When they were able to speak it correctly, they'd receive a signature from the teacher.
In the end, the top 3 pupils who manage to obtain the most signatures will each get a prize at the end of the month. This activity will continue on Hari Bahasa Malaysia (every Tuesday) and English Day (every Thursday).
2. Tuesday - Writing Competition
Year 2 Pupils (Tahap 1)
Year 6 Pupils (Tahap 2)
On Tuesday, the annual writing competition was held. Pupils of each class were given one hour to answer the question papers prepared by their own English teachers.
The objective of this competition was to encourage pupils to write sentences with the correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. 3 winners from each class will receive their prizes during the Prize Giving Ceremony at the end of the year.

3. Wednesday - The Hangman Competition
On Wednesday, the Hangman Competition was held. Pupils from Year 4-6 were all involved. First, they were separated into 5 groups of six. The theme of the day is Animals.
Then, each group started with choosing a number randomly which corresponded to a particular word from a list of words prepared by the teacher earlier.
Subsequently, each member of the groups tried to guess a letter each until the whole group managed to guess the whole word. 2 marks were allocated for the group if they succeeded. The top 2 groups with the highest score won.
4. Wednesday - The Spelling Bee Competition
The Spelling Bee Competition continued after the Hangman Competition. Unlike Hangman, Spelling Bee was an individual competition in which each pupil took turn to choose a number randomly which corresponded to a list of words prepared by the teacher.
Then, the teacher pronounced the word loudly twice for the pupil to spell it out. 2 marks were given for each correct answer. 1 mark was deducted if the pupil requested the teacher to repeat its pronunciation for two more times or to explain the meaning of the word. Top 5 pupils with the highest marks won.
5. Thursday - "Mari Kita Translate"
On Thursday, pupils participated in the "Mari Kita Translate" competition in which the pupils were given 20 minutes to translate a list of words prepared by the teacher from Bahasa Malaysia into English. Top 2 pupils from each class with the highest score won.
6. Thursday - "Guess the Actions!"
After the "Mari Kita Translate" competition, pupils were separated into 5 groups of six again to take part in the "Guess the Actions" game.
Before the game started, each group decided who were the Guessers and who were the ones who showed the Actions. 30 phrases were prepared by the teacher and each group chose a number randomly which corresponded to a list of phrases prepared by the teacher.
Then the Guessers stood in front of the whiteboard, facing away from the board, while the Action-showers looked at the phrase which the teacher wrote on the board and showed it to the Guessers with whatever actions they can come up with.
Each group were given 1 minute to try to guess the phrase. Successful attempts were rewarded with 3 points. 1 point was deducted if the Action-showers used any forms of sound to aid their actions-showing.

7. Story-telling Competition
Last but not least, pupils from each class took part in the first English Story-telling Competition in our school on Friday. The categories are as follows:
Top 3 pupils from each groups will receive their medals or certs at the end of the year at the Prize Giving Ceremony.
Marks allocated were as the following:
- Group 1 - year 1 & 2
- Group 2 - year 3 & 4
- Group 3 - year 5 & 6
Top 3 pupils from each groups will receive their medals or certs at the end of the year at the Prize Giving Ceremony.

- 30% for Pronunciation
- 30% for Actions
- 20% for Expression
- 20% for Fluency
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the English Week at SJKC Manchis was carried out successfully from 15 April to 19 April 2013 with many thanks to our headmaster and all the teachers for their support and help.
